About Community Action, Inc.

Community Action, Inc. (formerly known as Jefferson-Clarion County Economic Opportunity Association, Inc.) was established in 1965 as a private, non-profit charitable 501(c)(3) corporation and has been designated by the Boards of Commissioners of Clarion and Jefferson Counties to serve as a multi-purpose administering and service delivery entity for a variety of anti-poverty, social and/or humanistic programs. The Community Action movement was created as a result of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 (EOA) and the federal Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO). National directors have included Sargent Shriver and Donald Rumsfeld. Local Community Action Agencies (CAA's) were created to fight the "War on Poverty". Community Action, Inc. has been instrumental in locally creating programs such as: VISTA, the Job Corps, Neighborhood Youth Corps, Legal Services, Head Start, Foster Grandparent Program, Green Thumb, Weatherization Programs, TEFAP, Employment and Training Programs (CETA and JTPA), Older Americans Act, Women, Infants and Children (WIC) and Federal Housing Programs, which along with many new programs, continue today. Community Action, Inc. is governed by a local tripartite Board of Directors.

Mission

Community Action, Inc. partners with community members to improve low-income situations by assisting families with activities to overcome barriers, improve economic status, and enhance their quality of life.

Services

  • Services Community Action, Inc. offers include: adult education and career development services, including GED preparation, life skills and job readiness training; domestic violence prevention services, including emergency shelter, counseling, legal advocacy and education; emergency services including assisting with food, rent, and utilities; case management services, assisting families with budgeting, overcoming barriers, and working towards self-sufficiency; homeless services including case management, and emergency shelter; weatherization services, making homes more energy efficient and providing energy education to their residents; tax preparation services; medical assistance transportation services; affordable rental housing; etc.

Business Education Connect

Activities

  • Career Awareness Activities
    Career Days, Careers on Wheels, Industry Days, Career Fairs, Career Connect, Career Cruises, Virtual Career Café, College Cruises, etc.
  • Mock Interviews
    Company representatives and/or substitute(s) will conduct a simulated interview with students. This is typically done on site at the school location, virtually, or other (company) selected site.
  • Financial Reality Fairs
    These fairs offer an interactive experience in which students identify their career choice and then complete a budget for expected monthly expenses as well as the occasional “life” events that may occur. Similar to the game of LIFE.
  • Guest Speakers
    Guest speakers travel to the classroom to share their professional stories, knowledge, skills, and experiences with students.
  • On Site Tours
    Students, parents, and teachers travel to the company to learn first-hand the skills, career pathways, and job duties required to work within the company.
  • Job Shadowing
    Students may opt to shadow or closely observe an employee performing the duties of the position. Duration is typically 3 hours and occurs on site at the company.
