Ophthalmic Assistant

Description

Provide support to the Physician and assist in the development, implementation and evaluation of patient care in the office. You will be required to coordinate the care with other Penn Highlands services or outside health care providers. You will serve as a liaison between the physician, the mid-level provider and all other health care providers. 

Tasks

  • Assist with eye exams: measure vision, take history, and perform preliminary tests.
  • Prepare patients for procedures like cataract surgery or laser treatments.
  • Support the ophthalmologist during procedures and maintain a sterile field.
  • Operate and assist with tests like tonometry, retinal imaging, and visual fields.
  • Document test results accurately for review by the ophthalmologist.
  • Educate patients on eye conditions, treatments, and post-procedure care.
  • Ensure quality patient care and assist in maintaining clinical efficiency.

Qualifications / Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Current Certified Ophthalmic Assistant OR completion of a Clinical Medical Assistant program, LPN preferred
  • Five years Ophthalmic office experience (in lieu of education requirement)
  • Two years working in an Optometric office setting preferred; Knowledge of human physiology and anatomy
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant(COA) required within two years of hire
  • Knowledge of various ophthalmic equipment preferred
  • Maintain Medical Assistant Certification or Practical Nurse licensure through state of Pennsylvania
