Description
The Head Filer is responsible for safety, quality, productivity, recovery, and for employee development within the sawmill filing department while maintaining and changing sawmill and planing mill saws, knives, and related equipment. The Head Filer also assists with troubleshooting manufacturing defects.
Tasks
- Follow safety standards; report or correct any observed safety hazards in the filing room area.
- Manage filing room equipment maintenance; order parts and maintain inventory of saws and guides.
- Lead and train filing personnel; demonstrate safe operation and proper procedures for all equipment.
- Provide team communication, motivation, and support to ensure effective work performance.
- Oversee use and maintenance of grinding, leveling, tensioning equipment, saw guides, and bearings.
- Read technical manuals, stay current on technology, and make process improvement recommendations.
- Clean work areas, perform additional duties as assigned; on-site attendance is essential.
Qualifications / Education
- Five (5) years of experience and fully proficient in:
- sharpening band saws, round saws, and knives;
- saw and knife grinding, leveling, tensioning both manually and with a machine;
- alignment of sawing/chipping equipment running surfaces; and
- stellite and carbide tooth technology.
- Ability to understand and operate:
- various welding equipment and processes
- the assembly and set-up of machinery, and
- forklift and other mobile equipment as applicable.
- Ability to follow all company, state and federal safety rules when performing required job duties.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment criminal history check and a pre-employment drug screening.
- May be exposed to dust, noise, trip hazards, and extreme temperatures.
- Individuals must be willing to wear the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times. Positions may require additional PPE at specific times. Examples of PPE which may be required include high visibility garments, hand protection, eye protection, hearing protection, a hard hat, foot protection, and a face shield.
