Description
Lab Support Technicians and Specimen Processing staff are responsible for the early stages of laboratory testing. Their work focuses on receiving, labeling, and preparing biological specimens such as blood or urine for analysis. They ensure that each sample is properly identified and routed to the correct department, often performing tasks like centrifugation and aliquoting. These roles require attention to detail, familiarity with lab systems, and good organizational skills. Typically, only a high school diploma and on-the-job training or a short certification are needed. These roles are essential for maintaining workflow and accuracy in busy hospital or reference labs.
Tasks
- Provide courteous, respectful service; show initiative and assist with department work completion.
- Monitor tube and courier deliveries; log specimen receive time into the system accurately.
- Answer questions on specimen collection, results, and normal ranges per lab protocol.
- Follow biohazard safety rules; disinfect work area during and after shifts to prevent exposure.
- Train new staff, resolve specimen issues, complete quality forms, and request help when needed.
- Centrifuge, aliquot, label, and store samples per policy; share specimens as needed.
- Verify and request specimens in LIS; prep and send to outside labs, notifying of issues promptly.
Qualifications / Education
