Description

The Log Procurement Supervisor focuses on the procurement of standing timber and logs to meet the needs of the Kane hardwood mill and other customers. The procurement department is annually responsible for supplying approximately 8 MMBF of sawlogs as well as pulpwood.

Tasks

  • Oversee the purchase and harvest of approximately 4 MMBF of standing timber annually at profitable rates. Oversee the purchase of approximately 4 MMBF of logs annually at profitable rates through competitive bidding process, log purchase agreements, and gatewood log deliveries. Prepare timber bids on advertised stumpage sales. Assist in cruising and valuation of potential land purchases or sales. Coordinate and submit timber and log sale payments, set up contracts and work with accounting to ensure sale payment deadlines are met and accounted for properly. Administration of timber sale contracts.
  • Negotiate cut/skid/ haul contracts. Supervise any timber sale contract work i.e., roadwork, fencing, sale close out, etc.
  • Negotiate/coordinate with timber owners/ representatives.
  • Maintain adherence to FSC standards pertaining to procurement activities.
  • Secure appropriate bid deposits, bid bonds, performance bonds, and insurance certificates.
  • Analyze timber sale purchases at the completion of harvesting. Write quarterly and annual activity report. Develop other analyses and reports as requested by the resource manager.
  • Perform additional duties as required by supervisor.
  • On-site attendance is essential to effectively perform the listed duties and responsibilities.
  • Supervise the procurement operations team.
  • Responsible for performance management of direct report in accordance with company values, objectives, and policies.
  • Provide mentoring, coaching, training, and support consistent with developing and sustaining a high-performing and accountable team.

Qualifications / Education

  • A thorough knowledge and understanding of hardwood log scaling and grading, timber and log values, timber harvesting costs, and basic accounting. Basic understanding of using GPS, the ability to create maps using GIS, as well as ability to understand and use timber and log scaling software and hardware. Professional word processing and spreadsheet (Excel) skills. The ability to communicate and negotiate effectively with a variety of people including co-workers, contract loggers, and haulers. The ability to pass a pre-employment Motor Vehicle Report.
  • Bachelor’s degree in forestry or the knowledge equivalent to that received through graduation from high school plus additional related course work in college-level courses is preferred. The equivalent knowledge gained through experience is accepted.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of previous experience in log sales or log procurement sales is required. Prior leadership experience.
