Description
Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLTs) and Medical Laboratory Scientists (MLSs) are more advanced roles responsible for analyzing and interpreting lab tests. They perform diagnostic testing on various samples, operate complex lab equipment, and ensure quality control standards are met. MLTs usually hold an associate’s degree, while MLSs typically have a bachelor’s degree in a science-related field, along with professional certification. These professionals play a critical role in patient diagnosis and treatment by delivering accurate and timely test results to healthcare providers.
Tasks
- Follows lab/hospital policies for specimen collection, processing, and analysis per protocols.
- Performs qualitative/quantitative testing with accuracy, precision, and efficiency.
- Assists in training new staff and students, following competency and procedural guidelines.
- Adheres to safety, confidentiality, and compliance standards in all lab environments.
- Conducts moderate complexity tests independently; high complexity under oversight.
- Communicates professionally, documents accurately, and follows up on critical results.
- Maintains equipment, performs QC, tracks inventory, and resolves issues per protocol.
Qualifications / Education
- Associate's degree in a laboratory science with certification (or eligible new graduate) from an accredited institution as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science, with 6 months of clinical laboratory experience OR equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88 for individuals performing high complexity testing. Minimum 1 years experience in a hospital laboratory preferred. Familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems preferred.
