Description

The Lands Manager oversees the inventory, Geographic Information Systems, property disposition, easements, and licenses in support of forest management of the commercial forestland operated by a long-term forest products company with lands in Warren, Venango, Clarion, Forest, Elk, McKean, Jefferson, Elk, Clearfield, Cameron, and Potter counties, Pennsylvania.

Tasks

  • Ensure the management of all silvicultural activities on the Collins Pennsylvania Forests, including timber block layout and marking, invasive plants, existing and potential forest health issues.
  • Define key department objectives, supporting their achievement and measuring/reporting the results.
  • Lead a safe working environment by training employees in practices; motivating employees to lead the operation to superior safety performance; engaging in continuing education and improvement to processes and work procedures; and leading safety behavior by example.
  • Ensure the harvest basket has one year of annual allowable harvest volume.
  • Maintain FSC certification as it pertains to all Collins Pennsylvania Forest activities, including preparing for all aspects of annual FM audit, acting as primary contact with auditing agency and auditor regard FM audit, and preparing required reports addressing any audit deficiencies.
  • Evaluate and make recommendations on potential land purchases, trades, sale of non-strategic tracts, and land-based agreements.
  • In collaboration of the VP Resources, represent the Collins Pennsylvania Forests on legal and political issues, particularly PGC and KQDC.
  • Conduct public relations as it relates to land and forest management.
  • Develop and set the department annual budget, goals, and objectives.
  • Develop and prepare analyses and reports as requested by VP Resources.
  • Administer contracts pertaining to work conducted on the CPF and all related activities.
  • Challenge department personnel to develop new products, processes, and ideas that will improve financial returns or reduce costs.
  • Lead the collection of rolling inventory plot data, control the data, and manipulate data in modeling software.
  • Prepare annual AgCredit operations plan and Collins Pennsylvania Trust operations plan.
  • Perform annual calculation of current standing inventory.
  • Collaborate with oil and gas companies to protect company resources and assets when oil, gas, and mineral resources are being collected.
  • Perform additional duties as required by supervisor.
  • On-site attendance is essential to effectively perform the listed duties and responsibilities.

Qualifications / Education

  • Expert-level computer skills, including the suite of applications in Microsoft Office and ARC-GIS applications supported through ESRI.
  • Must be able to perform rigorous, field-based work in all weather conditions, on steep, brush-filled terrain.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent analytical, reasoning, and problem-solving skills; ability to think creatively and find innovative solutions to complex problems. Ability to collaboratively solve problems.
  • High level of personal integrity and ethical and professional standards.
  • Excellent time-management and organizational skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent experience in forestry, biology, forest engineering, natural resource management, economics, business, plant biology, plant genetics, or agriculture sciences.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of field-based forestry operations.
  • Minimum of five (5) year of supervisory experience preferred.
