Description
The Harvest Manager focuses on forest product flow and quality and will be responsible for administering and supervising all timber harvesting and hauling operations and contractors on the Collins Pennsylvania Forest and purchased timber sales. The Harvest Manager will work cooperatively with the Land Manager, Log Sales Supervisor and Procurement Supervisor to achieve Kane Hardwood timber harvesting goals.
Tasks
- Maintain FSC certification as it pertains to timber harvesting activities.
- Oversee forest product flow and quality, including regularly monitoring log yard inventories and contacting customers, internal and external, to meet their raw material needs.
- Prepare and present log supply plan to meet mill requirements and division goals monthly.
- Prepare and negotiate timber harvesting and hauling contracts to maintain a viable contractor workforce while keeping costs competitive and in-line with local markets.
- Ensure all contractors have required and documented insurances.
- Conduct regular field inspections on each harvest site to ensure contract compliance and complete post-harvest inspection reports.
- Document logger training requirements (SFI) completed by logging contractors.
- Administer road bonding and road use program with federal, state, and municipal agencies. Closely monitor bonded road conditions for possible damages and other users is necessary to limit company liability.

- • Manage associated non-timber activities including public relations, recreation, and wildlife.
- • Perform additional duties as required by supervisor.
- • On-site attendance is essential to effectively perform the listed duties and responsibilities.
Qualifications / Education
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of FSC principles and guidelines, hardwood log scaling and grading, timber and log values, timber harvesting costs, and basic accounting are required.
- Word processing and spreadsheet (Excel) skills required.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact and negotiate effectively with co-workers, contract loggers and haulers, municipal and agency representatives, and the public required.
- Must be able to perform rigorous, field-based work in all weather conditions, on steep, brush-filled terrain.
- The ability to pass a pre-employment Motor Vehicle Report is required.
- Bachelor’s degree in forestry (or a similar field) or the equivalent knowledge gained through experience required.
