Description

A periodontist is a licensed dentist that specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease (gum disease), and in the placement of dental implants.

Tasks

  • Diagnose and treat gum diseases (e.g., gingivitis, periodontitis).
  • Perform scaling, root planing, and soft tissue surgeries.
  • Place and maintain dental implants.
  • Conduct regenerative procedures to restore lost bone.

Qualifications / Education

  • DDS or DMD degree.
  • Completion of a 3-year residency program in periodontics.
  • Board certification is available but optional.
