Description
A periodontist is a licensed dentist that specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease (gum disease), and in the placement of dental implants.
Tasks
- Diagnose and treat gum diseases (e.g., gingivitis, periodontitis).
- Perform scaling, root planing, and soft tissue surgeries.
- Place and maintain dental implants.
- Conduct regenerative procedures to restore lost bone.
Qualifications / Education
- DDS or DMD degree.
- Completion of a 3-year residency program in periodontics.
- Board certification is available but optional.
