Description

A certified school dental hygienist is a licensed dental hygienist with an educational specialist certificate to address the dental care needs of school-aged children in school settings that have a dental hygiene services program. Duties include developing and presenting educational and preventive dental health programs and services to students; providing supplemental instruction in the care and preservation of teeth, dental appliances, and dental hygiene; and perform dental screenings to students in lieu of a dentist's exam.

Tasks

  • Conduct dental screenings for students to detect early signs of oral health problems.
  • Identify cavities, gum disease, and other dental conditions during screenings.
  • Apply fluoride varnish, dental sealants, and perform professional cleanings.
  • Provide preventive oral health treatments to students.
  • Educate students on oral hygiene, healthy eating, and regular dental visits.
  • Teach staff about promoting oral health and hygiene practices.
  • Refer students to dentists or specialists for follow-up care as needed.

Qualifications / Education

  • Bachelor’s or Associate Degree in Dental Hygiene
  • PA State Licensure as a dental hygienist
  • Certification or Endorsement for School Work
  • Continuing Education to maintain licensure and stay updated on current practices
  • Experience with Children
  • State-Specific Requirements (e.g., background checks, additional training)
