Description

An expanded function dental assistant performs under the supervision of a licensed dentist, such as coronal polishing, placing and condensing amalgam restoration and other restorative materials, fluoride treatments, including fluoride varnish, placing and removing rubber dams among other functions.

Tasks

  • Prepare patient for procedures and assist dentist during treatment.
  • Sterilize or disinfect instruments and maintain infection control.
  • Set up instrument trays and prepare materials for dental procedures.
  • Record treatment information accurately in patient records.
  • Assist dentist in managing medical or dental emergencies.

Qualifications / Education

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Dental Assistant training program and PA State Dental Assistant Certification
  • Expanded Function Training Program (completion of an EFDA training program that includes coursework and clinical experience)
  • 1-2 years work experience as a dental assistant
  • Continuing education to maintain license
